The Fiat Lux project explores the endemic and engrained labour exploitation system in Korea. Especially, it challenges and re-interprets the Korean female labourers’ Haan, whose value was often overlooked by their society. The term Haan is a Korean conventional way of conveying multiple sentiments such as hurt, despair, resentment, and loss of an individual over a long period of time. Plastic thread is a central material in this project and is exclusively produced in the Korean traditional fabric markets of central Seoul that drove the Korean economy in the 1970s. Each thread radiates its own light, and it gives shape to the female labourer’s Haan. Fiat Lux is created through the complex repetitive process of cutting and pasting, which is inspired by Korean female’s traditional patchwork, called Jo-gak-bo. Fiat Lux portrays Korean society from the perspective of the women that helped to create it. Let there be light.
